Pride is about more than just a party.
Pride is about more than just the right to marry and adopt and blend into the mainstream.
Pride is about more than just laws protecting queers from discrimination.

Pride is about having the courage, strength, and awareness to challenge all forms of oppression in our daily lives, and to stand in solidarity with the diverse individuals that make up the “queer community.”

Pride means challenging each other and others to “riot” in all sorts of ways: When we come together against the transphobia that pervades many GLBT spaces. When we acknowledge the fatphobia, the fear of people with disabilities, and the silence around mental health issues that destroys our ability to connect with one another. When we truly question what it means to live our lives on this colonized land.

Stonewall was a riot that changed history in North America, leading to many of the laws aimed to protect our “rights” and a change in the general public’s “acceptance” and support of queers. What are we doing to change history now?

We dance to remember those that came before us, those that stand beside us and the future generations to come!

Please join us in honouring our continued struggle.

We strive to create space that is safer for folks. We do recognize that it is impossible to create a completely safe space. We envision events that are pro-queer, pro-trans, pro-gender-queer, pro-ethnic, cultural, and racial diversity, spaces that are welcoming and friendly for folks with different body types, ways of presenting, different abilities/different ways of moving, folks who are poor and low-income, and different belief systems. We oppose all forms of oppression, and work towards being as accessible and inclusive as we are able. We hope to be constantly challenged to continue learning and developing our anti-oppressive policies and practices and encourage those in our communities to do the same. We aim to deal with any concerns raised in a productive and respectful manner.

As you may know, since the last 19+ dance party, we’ve been on the lookout for a new venue, because our former regular location can no longer accommodate our late-night loudness. On November, 20th, 2010, in Victoria, Coast Salish Territories, and many other cities throughout North America and around the world, people will gather to commemorate those who have been killed due to gender-based violence or transphobia.

Following the murder of Rita Hester in Boston twelve years ago, concerned supporters launched the “Remember Our Dead” web project, an online memorial listing the names of trans* individuals killed across the United States. In 1999, a candlelight vigil was held in San Francisco. As the movement spread, it was decided that each November a day of remembrance would be held internationally to raise awareness of hate crimes against trans* people and others who have been victims of transphobic violence.

TransAction is a local organization that both advocates for the rights of trans* and gender-variant people and strives to create safer spaces within the broader community. Over the past four years TransAction has organized a Transgender Day of Remembrance event, both to celebrate the lives of trans* folks and to show resistance to the ongoing marginalization of gender-variant people.

Members of our communities with various identities and experiences have been invited to speak at this year’s Transgender Day of Remembrance. By sharing our stories, we hope to raise awareness and broaden the understanding about the marginalization of gender-variant people, to celebrate the lives that have been lost, and to fight back against culture rooted in systemic violence and oppression.

Looking for Speakers

This is a call out to anyone who is interested in speaking at this year’s Trans Day of Remembrance ceremony. Although TDoR is a solemn and reflective event which honours trans* individuals who have been killed due to gender-based violence and/or transphobia, pieces that are hopeful and inspirational in tone and content are most welcome. If you have stories, anecdotes, and perspectives that you would like to share during the ceremonial component of the evening, contact transactionvictoria@gmail.com within the next few days.

To allow time for a variety of voices, please keep pieces under five minutes in length.

Do you have songs, stories, spoken word, interpretive dances, puppet shows, a stand-up routine, etc. etc. etc. that you would like to perform during this year’s TDoR? If so, arrive early and make sure to put your name on the sign-up sheet at the front door.
